Franklin D. Roosevelt, A Social Pioneer…

A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself.
Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people

This quote is from Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the USA from March 1933 to April 1945. He assumed presidency in the depths of the Great Depression with a desire to focus on the American people regaining belief in themselves. His responses to the challenges he faced both leading the country during World War II and his own personal health issues, having had polio as a child, made him a defining figure in American history. At the same time he was also increasingly aware of environmental concerns and humanitarian issues and ahead of his time with his ‘New Deal’ providing economic and social reform.
