Your Guide To Biomass Heating

As autumn turns chillier it’s time to think about turning the heat on, but the expectation of even higher energy bills can be a big turn off. Freeing yourself from the clasp of the big energy companies sounds like something dreams are made of. But you do have a choice – choose renewable technology to heat your home.

Biomass

Surprisingly, Biomass is not the first technology people tend to think of, yet it is a truly viable alternative to fossil fuelled heating. A biomass boiler usually runs on wood pellet fuel (there are some alternatives but this is the most popular). The beauty of wood pellet fuel is that it is the by-product of forestry and sawmills which would otherwise be wasted. So, the impact on the environment is minimal. Wood pellets can be produced from thinnings and the removal of deformed trees and branches as part of the ongoing maintenance of woodland. The sawdust that is produced in sawmills can also be used to make wood pellets. How good is that?

It Gets Better…

Biomass fuel, whether it’s wood pellets, logs, wood chips or agricultural products grown for fuel, is part of the carbon cycle. This means that the amount of CO2 you create when you burn the fuel is used by the plant or tree as it is growing. The process is ongoing as trees are replaced and fuel crops are grown.

It Gets Even Better…

As if having access to an endless supply of renewable fuel is not enough, you can actually get paid to use your biomass boiler. Yes, you heard me right – you get paid. Under the governments Renewable Heat Incentive scheme you get paid 12.2p/kWh for the heat you generate for seven years. The tariff has been set to reflect the level of expected cost of generated renewable heat over 20 years. It can only be good news for people who join the scheme.
